While in Genk’s youth club academy, his performance caught the attention of lovers of football and the media. In fact he was predicted by Belgian media to be one of the young players who would grow to spearhead and bring glory to Belgian national team. Kevin may have consolidated this prediction as his role in the 2018 World Cup led Belgium to the third place victory.

While he was 14 years old and played for Genk youth academy, he was separated from his family and only saw them on weekends. He had to learn quickly how to live independently managing himself and the little money he was paid.

Not only did Kevin impress the press and his fans, his dedication and quintessential skill earned him a promotion from Genk’s youth team to the first team line-up in 2008.

Having been promoted to Genk’s first team squad, Kevin De Bruyne made his first appearance in 2009 where his club played against Sporting Charleroi and secured all three points. His performance was good and earned him more playing time throughout the season.

In 2010-2011 season, Kevin made 32 appearances for his team scoring 5 goals with 16 assists. In this season, Genk ended up winning the Belgium Pro league.

He got signed to the English premier league club Chelsea in 2012 following orders from the owner of the club Roman Abramovich for a fee revolving around £7 million. Kevin was just 20 years at this time. Unfortunately, he was rarely used and was not given time to shine. The club thought he still needed more development and didn’t enlist him in their first team squad and subsequently loaned him to Werder Bremen where his scoring ability came back to life and his form greatly improved.

After returning to Chelsea from a long season loan, many would have thought that this young talented player would be given a chance considering his contributions in Werder Bremen during his loan period, but that never happened. He only made 3 appearances in Chelsea with no Premier league goal and one assist. His only goal for Chelsea was against Malaysia IX in a pre-season friendly game. His assist came in Chelsea’s 2013-2014 premier league season opening game against Hull City where they ended up winning Hull with 2 nil.

In 2014, he was sold to Wolfsburg for £18. It was in Wolfsburg that his football career took a new turn leading to him being named Footballer of the Year in Germany in 2015. His performance thrilled the world and caught the attention of many clubs, and finally he was signed by Manchester City in that same year for humongous £54 million seconding Angel Di Maria who was the most expensive signing in the British football history with £59.7 million deal to Manchester United in 2014 as at then.

His signing was announced by Manchester City on the 30th of August 2015. His contract was for 6 years.

In Manchester City the career of Kevin De Bruyne has bolstered. He’s grown from strength to strength with many goals to show for it. He has become a key ingredient in Manchester City’s first team squad to the point that when he is missing in the team, the vacuum that his absence creates becomes very visible. So far he has made 149 appearances for Manchester City in Premier league and has scored 31 goals.

One of the things that cannot be overemphasized is the confidence his country has bestowed on him which is evident in how they’ve constantly involved him in their national team since 2010. Even during his trying times, they still believed in him and always gave him a chance. Little wonder why Kevin is devoted to his National team and has in recent times played a major role in the success of the team. With 74 appearances and 19 goals so far, he has sure done well for his country with more to be done in the future.
